The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded two Branco Weiss Fellows with ERC Starting Grants. Dr. Xavier Dumusque has received the grant for his research project called “Signal correction to reveal other earths”. Dr. Marco Hutter’s winning project is titled “Learning mobility for real legged robots”. In this project, the researchers apply machine learning technologies to advance the locomotion skill of legged robots. The goal of Hutter’s project is to enable machines to learn to navigate complex environments and to overcome large obstacles or challenging terrain.
Starting Grants are awarded to early-career researchers of any nationality with two to seven years of experience since completion of the PhD and a scientific track record showing great promise. The funding of up to 2.5 million Euro per grant is provided for up to five years. It will help individual scientists and scholars to build their own teams and conduct pioneering research across all disciplines. The grants, worth in total €621 million, are part of the EU’s Research and Innovation programme, Horizon 2020.
