Branco Weiss Alumna Lisa Genzel has brought together more than 80 scientists from over 20 institutions in the Netherlands to sign an essay titled: “How the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the necessity of animal research”. In the essay, the researchers argue that animal testing is essential for the advancement of human and veterinary health – as the current pandemic has shown: “The current COVID-19 pandemic clearly highlights how much we actually rely on animal research. COVID-19 affects several organs and systems, and the various animal-free alternatives currently available do not come close to this complexity.”

The essay has received much coverage from Dutch and German media and was even discussed in the Dutch house of representatives, the “Tweede Kamer”.
