The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) has awarded Branco Weiss Fellow Thomas Van Boeckel with one of its new Eccellenza Professorial Fellowships. Dr. Van Boeckel is one of 51 researchers who have been chosen out of 239 submitted applications for the first Eccellenza call. The funding will help him get established as an independent group leader with 2-3 people to work on antimicrobial resistance in animals. Dr. Van Boeckel will start as a non-tenure track assistant professor at the Institute for Environmental Decision at ETH Zurich on February 1, 2019.

The SNSF Professorial Fellowship funding scheme supports researchers who are working towards obtaining a permanent professorship. These generous awards should enable researchers to conduct projects under Moptimum conditions. The SNSF covers their project expenses as well as their salaries at the predefined rate for assistant professors at their higher education institution. The average budget for each project consists of 1.6 million Swiss francs.

Based on a government mandate, the SNSF supports scientific research in all academic disciplines. The SNSF was established as a private foundation in 1952. By allocating public research money based on the principle of competition, the SNSF contributes to the high quality of research in Switzerland, in close collaboration with higher education institutions and other partners.
