"Lightening the Arduousness of Human Existence"

Using a quote from Bertolt Brecht’s “Life of Galileo”, Dr. Branco Weiss, the founder and mentor of Society in Science, published a substantial article in Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) about the merits of philanthropy since its first mentioning during the 5th century BC.

Branco Weiss departs from reflecting on the currently widely discussed initiative “The Giving Pledge”. He arrives at the conclusion that private initiatives are needed at times when new ideas and technologies might disrupt the smooth evolutionary development of society. On such occasions, the government may not be able to react sufficiently fast. Philanthropic initiatives will reach the largest effect when young people are supported, since it is them to whom the future belongs.
