Insufficient Sleep May Lead to Metabolic Disorders

17.10.2012 10:22

In a recent study, lead author Josiane Broussard and her team found evidence that sleep deprivation – even for a short time – reduces insulin sensitivity in the body’s peripheral tissue, including fat cells. Over time, this can lead to metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes and obesity, as insulin helps to regulate appetite and energy metabolism. Results of this first-of-its-kind study were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the flagship journal of the American College of Physicians (ACP).
