Cheemeng Tan receives NIH grant to engineer synthetic bacteria

Branco Weiss Alumnus Cheemeng Tan has recently been awarded a Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA) from the US National Institute of Health (NIH).

The MIRA comes with a 5-year grant over $ 1.9 million. The fund will support Tan’s research in understanding the structure and function of synthetic bacteria for translational clinical medicine. The medical applications of these bacteria may include the delivery of medicine within the body, editing of CRISPR-Cas gene, killing of cancer cells, and administering of probiotics and oral vaccines.
