Annelies Vredeveldt is the first female professor of Legal Psychology in the Netherlands

Branco Weiss Alumna Annelies Vredeveldt has been promoted to Full Professor of Legal Psychology by VU Amsterdam. She took up her new position on March 1, 2025. Selected for the prestigious Fenna Diemer-Lindeboom chair, Prof. Vredeveldt is the first ever female professor of Legal Psychology in the Netherlands. The university has included her in a LinkedIn post about five important women in its history, beginning with Suze ‘t Hooft, the first woman enrolled at VU Amsterdam in 1905.

Annelies Vredeveldt was a Branco Weiss Fellow from 2013 to 2019. Today, she is the director of the Amsterdam Laboratory for Legal Psychology (ALLP), based at the Department of Criminology at VU Amsterdam. Prof. Vredeveldt regularly serves as an expert witness in criminal cases. She serves on advisory committees of the Netherlands Register of Court Experts, to establish standards and assess applications for registration as an expert witness in the field of Legal Psychology. She is also course coordinator of Project Reasonable Doubt, in which groups of students investigate the evidence in closed criminal cases.
