A perspective article on chemical sensors by Tomas Fiala

04.03.2025 23:14

Branco Weiss Fellow Tomas Fiala has published a perspective article in the journal ACS Chemical Neuroscience. The paper titled “Seeing the Spikes: The Future of Targetable Synthetic Voltage Sensors” summarizes the field of chemical probes that seek out defined neural cells in the brain and report on their electrical activity. Together with his collaborators from Columbia University in New York, Dr. Fiala discusses the design and applications of these probes, how they stand today in comparison to protein-based biosensors, and gives an outlook on their future development.

Dr. Tomas Fiala’s passion for chemical probes for neuroscience dates back to his doctoral studies during which he designed new targetable voltage sensors. This expertise translated into his current project as a Branco Weiss Fellow, which focuses on chemical probes for manipulating post-translational modifications implicated in neurodegenerative diseases.
