Fellowship Research

During sleep recent memories are replayed in the hippocampus and the cortex, a process believed to be underlying systems memory consolidation leading to a cortical memory representation. This replay has been associated to an electrophysiological phenomenon in the hippocampus: the sharp wave ripple. In her research, Dr. Lisa Genzel will combine animal and human experiments to investigate this process. By actively manipulating sharp wave ripples and thus subsequent memory performance in animals and recording the neural correlates of sleep related consolidation with functional resonance imaging in humans, she will seek to show that sleep plays an active role in memory consolidation via systems reorganization.
