Branco Weiss Fellow Julius Huijts has been promoted to Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Physics at the Eindhoven University of Technology. With his new research group, he is advancing the work he began during his Branco Weiss Fellowship: developing a unique electron source that produces ultrashort pulses of ultracold electrons and applying this technology to ultrafast electron diffraction on crystals of (membrane) proteins. This approach opens up the possibility of observing proteins in motion as they perform their functions – an advance that could deepen our understanding of disease mechanisms and inform the development of new therapies.
