Fellowship Research

Using an anthropological perspective, Dr. Michael Fabinyi’s research focuses on the social aspects of marine resource use and trade. Particular research interests include 1.) the role of China in global fisheries, examining the drivers, trends and effects of Chinese seafood consumption; 2.) coastal livelihoods in low-income countries, analysing the challenges and opportunities presented by fisheries trade; and 3.) fisheries governance, with a focus on social equity. His research has a strong applied dimension, and in addition to contributing to academic debates, his work aims to inform regional policy development.

  • Developed innovative ways to adapt ethnographic methods into the study of marine resource use and trade
